I truly believe that the library is more than just a place for learning it is a place of hope, a sanctuary, a sacred space where one can find one’s self. Indeed, this is a story that speaks of courage despite bigotry, persistence amidst blatant discrimination, and finding refuge inside the walls of the one place that welcomed all. Patricia McKissack went on to say:īut like ‘Tricia Ann, I had been fortified with enough love, respect, and pride to overcome any situation I encountered. It is positively chilling how there are some people now in the United States who actually wish to go back to this period in history. I was almost twelve when my parents trusted me to make the trek to the library by myself. … Most African American parents waited until their children were mature enough to cope with segregation before allowing them to venture outside their communities alone. I am cheating a little bit in this story as it is a fictionalized retelling of Patricia McKissack’s true story of what it was like growing up in the South in the 50s.
